Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, Perth’s largest outdoor art exhibition opens today. In its 6th successful year, the exhibition will display 64 sculptures by artists from around the world – the largest exhibition to date on Cottesloe Beach.
From 4 – 23 March Perth’s most popular beach - Cottesloe Beach - will be transformed into a stunning sculpture park overlooking the Indian Ocean that will be enjoyed by people from Perth and visitors from around Australia and overseas.
The popular, free-to-the-public, exhibition will run for three weeks and will feature 36 sculptures by West Australians, 14 by interstate artists and 16 works by international artists from seven countries: Argentina; Denmark; India; Japan; New Zealand; Norway; and the USA.
“Its great to be back on Cottesloe Beach! With daylight saving a thing of the past and the sun setting just after work the beach is bound to be full of the buzz of people wandering around, swimming and looking at the sculptures,” says Founding Director David Handley.
The exhibition organisers efforts to continue to seek sponsors and private donations to support the sculptors of WA have seen an increase in the level of artist support this year. Co-Principal Sponsor NAB andSculpture by the Sea, are excited to announce the NAB WA Sculptor's Scholarship has increased to $15,000. The scholarship recipient will be decided by Janet Holmes à Court and Robert Juniper and announced at the exhibition party on Saturday 6 March.
This is the most generous sculptor's scholarship or prize in WA and aims to provide financial support for a WA sculptor to reach the next stage of their career. NAB also fund the $1,000 NAB Kids Choice Prize, which allows the younger art critics to express their opinions.
“NAB is committed to supporting the arts in Australian communities and playing a role in helping bring creativity to life,” said Joseph Healy, Group Executive Business Banking, NAB.
“We thank the many talented exhibiting artists for sharing their artistic vision and outstanding potential with us and we and look forward to announcing the 2010 scholarship recipient later this week,” Mr Healy said.

One of the most popular and meaningful aspects of the Sculpture by the Sea is made possible thanks to Major Partner, Alcoa of Australia, which has supported the exhibition since its first year - with aluminium for some of the artists and the funding of the Alcoa School Education Program. This program features artist led sculpture making workshops which will be a highlight of the exhibition for approximately 1100 school children.
”Introducing art to the next generation is both exciting and important,” Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg said. “Encouraging expression and storytelling through art and sculpture is a big part of a strong community.”
In this year’s exhibition, seven sculptures by Western Australian artists are made with Alcoa’s metal aluminum: George Haynes, John Hutchinson, Andrew Kay, Darius Kowal, Melanie Maclou, Derek Roach and Ian Young.
