Eyes on Success

Looks aren't everything. But making a good impression is essential when you are applying for a new job or a hard earned promotion at work according to new research by Specsavers.

A national online poll has found that dressing for success may be more important than ever in tough economic times, and glasses are experiencing a revival as the accessory du jour for the modern career person.

People acknowledged they tailored their look for work, with 60% of people saying they had a specific pair of glasses reserved for the office. But it's not all work and no play for specs wearers, with 38% of respondents also saying their glasses made them look sexy.

Key findings from a national survey of over 500 people included:

62% of Australians believe they are more likely to be successful in their industry by wearing glasses

A third of people who took part in the survey believe that wearing a pair of specs has helped them get a new job or a promotion

77% believed that glasses made them look more 'professional'

70% said their specs made them appear more 'intelligent'

52% said they looked more 'mature'

54% believed they looked 'confident'

43% felt their specs helped them look 'creative'

38% said they felt sexy in specs

23% said glasses gave them a 'managerial' edge

Now that we know it's not just about what you know but the way you present yourself Perth Woman asked recruitment expert Michael Domipoulis and style expert Melissa Boyle for some tips ways to make a good impression at a job interview.

According to Michael the immediate visual impression a person's appearance makes can either open or shut doors.

"Clothing and grooming offer visual cues that provide clues to a person's character, personality, abilities, lifestyle and profession. Glasses can be a powerful feature of your image, helping to create an overall look that conveys your positive qualities - such as being efficient, smart and determined."

He explained that people make up their mind about how confident, credible, likeable and attractive a candidate is based on three levels of information:

Visual Cues - account for 55% of the perceptual information that you convey. These cues refer to your body language and appearance;

Vocal Cues - account for 38% of the impression you make on others and refers to tone of voice;

Verbal Cues - at only 7% the content of what someone says is the least important factor when it comes to making an impression on others.

Style expert Melissa Boyle says people make judgements based on someone's appearance.

"Our choice of attire leaves a lasting impression in the minds of would-be employers about your perceived professionalism and performance. You can use accessories like glasses to influence people's first impressions of you and reflect the persona that you want to portray at work."
