Cruel Guards
Drum roll please! I’m referring to the one at the start of The Panics album Cruel Guards, rolling into the slightly dark first track ‘Get Us Home.’ The Panics are no doubt one of the most promising acts to surface from WA recently. Cruel Guards is a richly layered album of acoustic, violins, harmonica piano, horns and much more including Jae Laffer’s easy on the ear vocals. You get much more than music from this album. Many songs, such as ‘Ruins’, are philosophical, reflective views of life, or story-telling with a message. Some songs such as ‘Get Us Home’ feel like a journey. ‘Don’t Fight It’ feels like soothing advice from a friend. While much of this album has a slightly melancholy or subdued feel there are enough upbeat tracks such as ‘Feeling is gone’ and ‘Live Without’ to make it an all round good listen for summer. Awesome.
