New owners
Social Subiaco (formally Social on Station) is undergoing a revamp thanks to new owners Steve and Michelle Jones. It’s been a big year for the couple who celebrated their first wedding anniversary on the 3rd of November 2007. For Steve, owning Social Subiaco is the realisation of a life-long dream to own his own business. For the couple, it’s a challenging and exciting time.
Steve worked for a major liquor supplier and in various hospitality venues for 22 years, during which time he met Michelle. Working for popular Bundaberg Rum at the time, and enjoying a drink with friends at Shenanigans bar in Darwin, a blonde, statuesque woman walked through the door and struck a kung-fu pose. That was all it took! Michelle stood next to Steve at the bar. Now wary of her lethal kung fu chop, Steve cautiously made his move.
He asked if he might have seen her on TV to which Michelle laughed and said she didn’t think so. Although she assured him that she was not infact the weather girl, Steve asked her for tomorrow’s forecast. “Much the same as today,” was Michelle’s answer. “That’s a shame, I was hoping you might forecast bacon and eggs for breakfast,” Steve said intentionally, fully aware of how corny it was!
Thanks to Steve’s ‘smooth’ lines and Michelle’s martial art prowess, the couple have now been together for four years. They honeymooned in France, where they took in more than their fair share of French vineyard culture. During a visit to a winery in the Loire Valley, they had to stop due to backed up traffic, which turned out to be heading to a French family reunion. One thing led to another and the couple found themselves invited.
Many of the relatives present, automatically thought that Steve and Michelle were also relations. The reunion venue was a house built into the side of a cliff face belonging to a very affluent family. They joined the family for dinner and were even invited down to the cellar for a bottle of delicious 25 year old riesling.
The couple fell in love with the style and elegant simplicity of the French culture. They are bringing this influence to Social Subiaco, not only in the sophisticated décor, but also in the new form of the Mumm Champagne Sunday lunch. Social has an exciting competition running until the end of February 2008 to win tickets to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Patrons go into this draw by attending the Champagne Sunday lunch, or when purchasing a bottle of Mumm champagne.
Steve and Michelle have big plans for Social Subiaco. These include, replacing many of the interior corners with smooth elegant curves; and having regular live entertainment in the bar area. Steve has a list of hospitality experience as extensive as a French wine cellar, and plans to put this experience and knowledge to use. However, in those busy times that are inevitable in this industry, he is ever mindful of Michelle’s Kung-fu chop.
