‘The Kimberley Sunrise’ a breathtaking diamond in a unique collection at Solid Gold
In the midst of a massive resources boom, Solid Gold, Western Australia’s leading diamond retailer of Argyle and Kimberley fancy coloured diamonds, is again putting Perth on the map with the recent acquisition of an exquisite collection of 220 natural Vivid, Fancy and Intense Yellow diamonds.
This unique collection of rare yellow diamonds is highlighted by a truly special diamond – ‘The Kimberley Sunrise’, a 5.04 carat Cushion Cut diamond with a natural Fancy Vivid Yellow colour valued at $358,000. This magnificent diamond, which was originally purchased in the rough with over 220 other diamonds and then cut and polished in Antwerp, highlights Solid Gold’s commitment and passion for rare, quality Western Australian diamonds.
The diamond was originally mined from the Kimberley Diamond Company’s Ellendale Mine located 2,000 kilometres north of Perth in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. As rough, the diamond weighed 8.15 carats. From Western Australia, the diamond travelled to Antwerp, Belgium where, like many diamonds of its size, it went for tender. It was here that it was purchased by Peter Greene, Master Craftsman and Executive Chairman of Solid Gold who immediately recognised the rarity and importance of such an unusual diamond.
"With a Vivid yellow colour grading, it is both the rarest and the most intense of the yellow diamond family"
Once the rough diamond had been purchased the next step was the challenging task of deciding how to cut the outstanding rough. After three weeks and much consultation and consideration of the grain of the diamond, how to gain the maximum colour and how to gain the most brilliance from the diamond, a cushion cut shape was chosen.
Master diamond cutter in Antwerp, Johan Olieslagers, then began the task of transforming the rough diamond into a sparkling piece of West Australian history. The responsibility of cutting the diamond can be a long process. After planning the best direction for sawing, the diamond was marked and placed on a sawing blade for one day. A further four days were spent shaping the diamond during which the diamond was constantly analysed and small adjustments made to the polishing angles. Brilliandeering was the final precise processes completed by hand, were the final facets are applied to the diamond and the true brilliance of the diamond was unveiled. The end result was a diamond of true radiance, polished to exact standards to provide maximum colour saturation and brilliance.
Once the cutting and polishing process was completed, the diamond was sent to the Gemological Institute of American (GIA), the leading fancy coloured diamond-grading laboratory in the world. Here it was graded and internationally certified for it’s colour, size and clarity. The end result? A stunning 5.04ct natural Fancy Vidid Yellow Cushion Cut diamond. A Vivid yellow colour grading is both the rarest and the most intense of the yellow diamond family.
